BSBC Summer Mechanic Date Posted: 7/18/2023
The Short Version
The Summer Mechanic(s) will work semi-independently to fix up bikes donated to the BSBC to ensure they are safe, functional, and reliable. The bikes donated to the BSBC all need work. Mechanics should bring the foundational skills and knowledge needed to fix these bikes and will work together with co-op staff to further develop their mechanic skills and confidence.
Summer Mechanics will be supported by our Lead Mechanic and Shop Manager in diagnosing and repairing bikes.
We are looking to hire a mechanic for a term lasting for two months in August and September.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. We will begin reviewing applications starting on July 24th.
Your day-to-day would include
- Building bicycles for sale and donation alongside Staff. You’ll build and make repairs to bicycles that will be sold or donated. You’ll make use of our large supply of used parts to get bicycles up and running. You’ll work under the Lead Mechanic and Shop Manager to prioritize building bicycles that will be sold to the public from our salesroom floor, as well as bicycles that are required to support our ongoing donation programs, and you’ll tackle more-involved projects, overhauling bikes from top to bottom!
Time & Pay
- Part-time; Estimated 20 hours per week
- Weekly stipend of $300 (Estimated $60/bike; with a target of 5 bikes per week )
- Flexible Hours; Must be on-site in the shop during some weekdays (Staff currently work in shop Mon - Thurs in the window of 10 - 4pm-ish)
- July 31 - September 29th
About You
- You’d rate yourself as an intermediate-advanced bike mechanic.
- You have one or more years of bike shop experience (or something equivalent) and you’re able to diagnose and fix 75% of the most common issues in bike repair. You’re comfortable researching and trying out what you don’t know. You feel comfortable installing bottom brackets, overhauling hubs, and working on headset adjustments.
- You’re able to creatively solve problems. Sometimes we don’t have the perfect substitution for a broken part in our used parts section. You’re able to cobble together a workaround that is almost as good as the original.
- You work well with others, are excited to learn, and aren’t afraid to ask questions. You are comfortable asking for support when fixing bikes gets tricky, and you get excited to problem-solve with others.
- You love all bikes, not only high-end and modern bikes. Much of the stock at the BSBC is donated bikes, 10-70 years old, ranging from bike-boom and department store bikes to middle-of-the-road 90s rigid mountain bikes, with the rare higher-end bike in the mix.
